Critical Care Comics Saint Rose Hospital Visit 2016-03-24

You guys might have seen me talk in other posts about my volunteer work with Critical Care Comics, but in case you haven’t here’s a brief rundown: a bunch of big kids get together with local nerds & do-gooders to gather comics books, then summon up some superheroes and hand out those comics to kids in local hospitals to bring some much needed fun to their day.  Who wouldn’t be happy to have Spiderman, Supergirl and Deadpool bring you a fat stack of comics?! Normally Batman would join us, but this time around he had some business to take care of back in Gotham…something about a fight with the man of steel…pfft…boys.
While I’ve been doing visits with them for a few months now, they’ve been around for 4 years doing good deeds and assembling their super squad! They’re all pretty awesome people in their own right and though Deadpool is a recent addition he’s a smash hit! It’s so much fun seeing how the kids light up when their favourite heroes (or anti-heroes) walk in! I tag along and do caricatures for any of the kids who’d like to be drawn as their favourite heroes or cartoon characters. On this last visit to Saint Rose I got to draw a little Beast Boy, a Wonder Woman and an Elsa along with a super cute little Mickey Mouse! Sometimes the kids will be too nervous or shy to interact much but will light right up when they see my drawing, which is really heart warming to see. Any reason to be in the hospital generally isn’t going to be good, so to bring a smile and some joy into their day is pretty cool! I’ve been doing caricatures for nearly 8 years now and it’s great to be able to give back and do something for people who might not feel up for going out at the moment.

During this visit we had a camera crew of Channel 3 news tag along for a segment that aired later that day. Our super crew went about business as usual, just with a bit more fanfare than normal. ^_^; It was pretty cool seeing our group get some tv-time. We’re legit! It’s true! We really do what we do!
And it’s pretty awesome. I aim to keep tagging along and doing what I can to help cheer people up when and where I can as long as they’ll give me the honour of doing so with their awesome team.
Thanks to @SandraNews3LV for coming today to spotlight everything that @CCComics4kids does in our community! pic.twitter.com/4rfoc0D1zb

Vegas: Zappos Fandom Friday 2016-03-25

On Friday, March 25th I was lucky enough to participate in Zappos Fandom Friday event! Zappos, for those not in the know, is an online retailer based in my quaint little home town of Las Vegas, Nevada. On top of being a successful company that ranks as one of the best in country to work for,  Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh has taken a very active role in helping to revitalise downtown Las Vegas, leading the way in it’s resurgence as a popular tourist & local hipster destination. And yes, if you read the Wired article I linked there, it’s true; there is a giant praying mantis that shoot fire in Downtown Vegas, located in front of the Downtown Container Park. Thanks, Tony.
As a participating artist/vendor at the event, I got to hang out in their lobby area and partake in all the nerdy goodness afoot! There were many super talented artists, groovy vendors, cosplayers, banging DJs, and even some llamas.
Yes, llamas.
Gosh they’re cute!
And really, it was a very cool event to attend. If I’m not mistaken, this was the first ever Fandom Friday thanks in no small part to Rogue Toys! Rogue Toys partnered with Zappos to get the gears rolling on this event and I’m so grateful they did. It’s always great seeing new opportunities and events pop up for the artistic community in this city! And what a fun event this was; there were dancing storm troopers, amazing cosplay, fantastic original art, live performances by Decaying Tigers, arcades games free to play, food trucks, and fun and games for all involved!
I came out with some limited edition Batman Vs. Superman prints in honour of the new movie. Have you seen it? Antho and I had already watched it by the time I went to the event, but I made sure not to give away any spoilers…but I didn’t really get much opportunity as almost everyone I asked about the movie admitted to being less than excited to see it…womp womp.

Even so, I managed to sell a few of the prints. ^_^ I’m thinking of putting them up on Etsy, but I have a few Superhero events left here in town first so I’ll see how they do. The nice thing about prints is once they’re made you have them, so even if I didn’t sell out of them at the event I’m glad to have gone!
How often do you get to encounter random llamas or dancing Storm Troopers, after all?
This is going to be an image heavy post, so be forewarned ye of sluggish internet!!

Also, if you see yourself or anyone you know and want me to include their name or remove photos, please contact me ASAP and I’ll be happy to oblige!

This fella was super friendly and was proud to be releasing the 8th issue of his comic soon! Right on! If you signed up for his mailing list you got a free digital copy, too. 🙂

Hopeless Savage Art had some cool stencil work! I like the Riddler Batman and Daredevils a lot.

Her original paintings were really neat! ^_^ She was pretty friendly, too. I love the Deadpool theme going on, and isn’t this melted crayon painting with pixelated heart super cute? I love the colors!

I didn’t see the artist here, so I hope they don’t mind too much that I’m sharing their work~ it’s AMAZING! Look at all the detail! How cool. I tried to ask everyone before taking photos but if you’re the creator of these paintings and want me to take them down or include your name, please just let me know!

This lovely lady was so talented! I love her images! Look at that sassy ass Snape. Guuuurl! I ended up taking home a Groot magnet and a Dwight magnet for Antho. I couldn’t resist, I loved the Office and Dwight is one of my favourites.

“We both know it’s not an airplane.”
Best. bib. ever!

This trooper was getting DOWN!!!

DECAYING TIGERS!!

The lovely ladies of VAGINA, or Very Awesome Girls Into Nerdy Activites. Naturally. Head’s out of the gutters, folks. 😉

Again, I had a total blast and was really glad to have gone. I met a lot of really cool people and got to see some amazing art and cosplay! I definitely recommend going if you ever get the chance!

10 Things I love on Etsy March 2016

Every month I like to take a moment to highlight some of my recent favourites from various sellers across Etsy. If you’ve never been to Etsy, you really should check it out! There are all sorts of fantastic hand-made, vintage, eco-friendly, niche/craft/artisanal goods to be found and there’s something for everyone! Whether you’re a total boho babe or are more into finding super exclusive fashion, they’ve got you covered!
01. I’ll start us right off with this gorgeous scarf from AnnushkaHomeDecor. Such lovely shades mixing together in this scarf in a striking visual design that’s still light weight enough for wear throughout the summer. The colors remind me of cherry blossoms and flamingos, perfect for spring or summer seasons without bulking up or adding too much heat. Delightful!

02. How about these sexy tights by ChicAudrey? Tights or stockings are always a fun addition to your wardrobe and make an easy way to take any outfit up a notch. I love layering with a fun pattern or colour on my legs! The subtle grey earthy tone in these will work throughout late summer, autumn and winter but can be worn any time by a true fashionista. Rock them under a little black dress and some boots or heels for the perfect going out look!
03. The textures in this scarf are amazing! Hand knitted by Elenashandmade shop, she has a ton of really fun options to choose from but I absolutely adore scarves, especially this one! Like tights and stockings, it’s really easy to add an extra kick of zest to an outfit simply by wrapping up your neck in something warm and cozy. For people who really like to keep their wardrobe simple, accessories can be an excellent way to change up your style throughout the year without having to get a whole new set of clothes.
04. All that being said, I think I could still find a way to justify fitting this bodycon dinosaur bones miniskirt by BadBunnyshop into my wardrobe. I already love dinosaurs, so any excuse to wear them is a major bonus for me. The body conscious design of this skirt ensures it’ll be sexy and form fitting without bulking you up, ladies!
05. And OH MY GLOB,you guys! Who wouldn’t love this Lumpy Space princess dress from Opheliareigns? I’m a huge fan of Adventure Time! LSP is such a pretty shade of purple, too, perfect for a casual going out look.
06. Cooleggingseveryday brings us these mermaid leggings perfect for yoga, jogging, partying, etc. What girl doesn’t want to summon her inner mermaid at every given opportunity? I especially dig this light green colour, not too vibrant but still super sexy! They have several different colors up on their Etsy shop so check them out if you’re a fan of fun leggings. 🙂
07. This Starry skies pullover by Lollipopninja is so, so cute! Who doesn’t love a cozy sweater to snuggle into in the dead of winter? While, true, summer is on it’s way in for us in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s rapidly on it’s way out for our friend’s down south so stay warm guys! I like the power lines in the design, reminds me of many good places in my life when the stars  first came out for the night.
08. How dank is this tie-dye t-shirt from Dyedfromthehart shop? It kind of reminds me of a creepy face! I like the unusual design choice, very fun. Antho and I are big fans of tie-dye and look for inspiration and motivation from all different sources, even other Etsy sellers sometimes. There’s so much incredible talent and it’s so fun trying to reverse engineer how people create their designs! When it comes to tie-dye there are so many possibilities, so many techniques and styles and colour combinations that there’s always something new to discover and duplicates are practically impossible to create. We’re constantly googling and admiring the work of other tie-dyers around the world~
09. And OMG this coffee cup  by Daisyandaster is SO cute! Hop in dork, time to go!
10. And how darling are these galaxy print shoes from the Bohipstian
Etsy really is such a great resource for buyers and sellers alike, I hope these posts help inspire you to look into what kind of goods and shops there are for you!
Have you ever purchased from an Etsy seller before?
XOXO

Hair: Now it’s here, now it’s gone. 2016-03-26

You guys may have noticed that I recently cut my hair, and quite drastically at that.
Some may be wondering why I would opt to remove the soft, flowing follicles that adorned my face in favour of a blunt short crop… or maybe not, you might not be the least bit concerned with what I do with my own hair, and right on if so. Feel free to bypass this post in favour of something more interesting to you.

So, here we are. It’s been about two weeks since my talented friend and barber Mindy took the trimmers to my dome. This has given me time to adjust to the differences and weigh them, along with the reasoning behind my decision.
In all honesty, I was really excited to take my hair off.
It’s been well over a decade since I’ve had short hair, and after bleaching my hair multiple times and chopping half of it off I still felt the itch to do something different. I was tired of the constant battle with roots that comes with lightening your hair and while my hair remained soft and touchable it was more fragile than I liked. I spent several weeks watching videos of women shaving their hair off, discussing their experiences with short hair, reading blogs, etc. The idea initially occurred to me after a conversation with one of the youngsters I drew during a hospital visit with Critical Care Comics. She was a teenager and we joked about our attachment to our hair- and it kind of gnawed at me. How invested am I in my hair, anyway? In all reality it’s just an accumulation of keratin and proteins projecting itself from my scalp.. while it can take years to grow out and maintain long, luscious locks, at the end of the day they are not the singular defining point to who I am. Over the past year I’ve dabbled in pink, purple, blue, green and blonde hair and while it was good fun to experiment it also helped reinforce the idea that my hair didn’t have to define me any more than I wanted it to.
It’s just hair.
It grows back.
And you know what?
Having short hair is GREAT!

I’ve knocked my shower time down to 10 minutes
Now I spend more time putting on skin creams than I do trying to rinse product out of my hair.
I’d bought Hair One’s Olive hair cleanser and conditioner for dry hair ages ago and never really used it. When my hair was long, I’d need 16-20 pumps of product to effectively saturate it all, and when it was bobbed it still took 10-12 pumps. It seemed like so much product to use each and every time I washed my hair, and was kind of a pain to pump-pump-pump away. Now 2-3 pumps will thoroughly saturate my hair and scalp and it’s so much easier to massage my scalp without tangling up my hair. The product was recommended to me the day I bought the bleach and I still have the same bottle, if that gives you an idea how infrequently I was using it! But man, this stuff is great with my short hair! It’s really nourishing and makes my hair so soft and shiny without drying out my scalp and turns washing my hair into a one-step process. Yes, yes, yes! Can I get a hallelujah from my fellow low-maintenance girls?
I no longer get hair in my face while driving. Windows down, moonroof open, baby.
Running my fingers through my hair feels SO awesome, and I never get any knots!
I keep getting referred to as Negasonic Teenage Warhead, and I’m 100% OK with that.
I actually feel a lot more confident without the security blanket of my long hair. Without anything to hide my face behind (aside from my beloved sunglasses) I’m finding that I face the world more head on. I feel more attractive without my hair. Fancy that!
It’s almost summer time, and in Vegas that means it’s about to get really hot. 110-115 degrees Fahrenheit/~40-46 degrees celsius highs… and having long hair in that kind of heat is miserable, at least for me. No longer will I have to suffocate under the sweaty weight of my own hair!
Also have to say that not finding long hairs in awkward places is pretty nice.
So far, the only real problem I have with the short hair is how fast my hair is growing back. It was buzzed down to nearly nothing only two weeks ago and already it’s grown over 1/4″! That might not seem like much, but at that rate it’s growing over 1/2″ every month. In a year my hair could be back down to my chin if I don’t keep on top of it!
So, what do you think?
Have you ever dramatically changed your hair or gone super short?
I’d love to hear from you!
XOXO

Project: Spring Tie-dye 2016-03-18

Happy Spring, guys!

How is your month going?
We’ve recently moved and during the process a lot of our tie-dye stuff got buried…but we’ve managed to dig it out of the abyss of the garage and made a fun new batch of goodies to share with everyone!
If you haven’t noticed before, Antho and I are pretty fond of tie-dying. It’s an excellent creative project that we can work on together and it’s so much fun to unwrap and unveil the finished products! There are so many fabric textures, colour combinations, folds and techniques that we’re constantly evolving and trying new things as we go.
We’ve also been doing research into ordering products wholesale and sourcing fun new styles.
I really enjoyed how this long sleeved ribbed cotton shirt turned out!
It’s almost long enough for me and I’m 5’10”! I prefer having my tummy covered with longer shirts but it could totally be rocked as a belly-baring shirt for the braver ladies out there. We’ve been using more or less the same dyes since the very beginning, but we’re really excited about a recent order for some high-end dyes that should be arriving soon. Our shop has also been getting more business lately, but we’re still far from the top performing tie-dye shop on Etsy and I want to change that. I’ve sunk some time into watching free lectures and reading blogs from top performers and gleaned some useful tips that have already quadrupled our sales! We’ve even sold a shirt to Luxembourg & one to Spain since I added international shipping to our shop!
Goals, people.
I got them!
Check out the rest of our colourful new creations after the jump!

Isn’t this embroidered skirt fun? The threads in the design absorbed the colours really well while the sequins remained bold and white. The skirt is really light and comfortable, perfect for prancing around barefoot!
We also found these awesome studded shorts, which Antho graciously modelled for us.
Even though they’re a size 10, there’s no way my butt would fit into these!
Seriously though, I really love these stud details! I would be so happy to wear these, too bad they’re too small for me. Oh well, some lucky Etsy shopper will be able to rock these!

Sexy studs!

Then there’s this flow little number. The cotton is so soft and comfy and the skirt drapes nicely! Sometimes these skirts can make me look puffy and weird, but I like how this one fits my body.
It’s a size XL and the waist is elastic so it gives a good bit of wiggle room.
Another pair of shorts! So excited to find these. The stitches and buttons remained bright white and provide a nice contrast against the tie-dye. I love how the pink, purple and navy blue bled through the material. It almost looks ice-dyed!

As I mentioned before, we’ve been experimenting with new patterns and sizes too, now offering 3XL and small sizes on top of the children’s line we started. So far XL has been the most frequently purchased size and there’s certainly no harm in branching out and adding selections for all shapes and sizes. We don’t believe in gendering our clothing because neither Antho or I ever shop strictly within our designated departments, and tie-dye is for anyone who wants to rock it! Some of my favourite clothes were men’s tops or shoes. I make sure to provide measurements for every item, too, because sizes can vary subtly between shirts and brands.
Again, these shorts are way too small for me, which is a shame. Look how fun they are!
What do you think, would you rock any of these?
If you really liked them, please check out our Etsy shop and help support our small business. Every sale helps us to pursue our dreams of making the world a more colourful place!
Tell us your thoughts!
XOXO
